Embark on one of the most epic and demanding high-altitude crossings in the Himalayas. The Parang La Pass Expedition is a 12-day, 128-kilometer journey that traverses from the rugged Spiti Valley to the serene landscapes of Ladakh. This difficult-grade expedition takes you over the formidable Parang La pass at 5,580 meters, across ancient trade routes, vast river beds, and along the shores of the pristine Tso Moriri Lake. Designed for experienced trekkers, it is a true test of endurance and a voyage through some of the most remote and spectacular wilderness in India.

Phase 1: Arrival & Acclimatization in Spiti (Days 1-3)

  • Day 1: Arrive in Kaza from Manali. The scenic drive crosses Rohtang Pass and Kunzum La. Overnight in a Kaza hotel.

  • Day 2: Acclimatization day based in Chicham village (4,270 m). Activities include a hill walk, visiting Key Monastery, and crossing the famous Chicham trolley bridge. Overnight in a homestay.

  • Day 3: Second rest and acclimatization day in Chicham, crucial for preparing your body for the high altitudes ahead.

Phase 2: The Ascent & Pass Crossing (Days 4-6)

  • Day 4: Chicham to Thaltak (8 Km | 4,693 m) Begin trekking! The trail offers views of Kanamo Peak and involves a steep ascent to the beautiful meadow campsite at Thaltak.

  • Day 5: Thaltak to Borochin (12 Km | 5,100 m) A challenging day descending into a deep gorge, crossing Rong Nala, and climbing over demanding scree slopes to reach Borochin camp at the foot of Parang La.

  • Day 6: Borochin to Kharsa Yongma via Parang La (14 Km | Pass: 5,580 m) Summit Day. A relentless climb to the pass, rewarded with panoramic views of Spiti and Changthang. Descend the Parang La glacier (caution for crevasses) to the Kharsa Yongma campsite.

Phase 3: The Descent into Ladakh (Days 7-11)

  • Day 7: Kharsa Yongma to Kapapuche (20 Km | 4,700 m) Trek downstream along the vast, braided riverbed of Datang Nala, crossing multiple streams.

  • Day 8: Kapapuche to Kitpodansa (20 Km | 4,550 m) Continue following the Pare Chu river, passing historic natural shelters used by ancient traders.

  • Day 9: Kitpodansa to Chumik Shilde (18 Km | 4,704 m) A dramatic day! Cross the waist-high, strong current of the Parechu river (via human chain) to enter the lush green meadows of Norbu Sumdo—the gateway to Ladakh. Spot wildlife like the kiang (wild ass).

  • Day 10: Chumik Shilde to Kiangdom (14 Km | 4,588 m) Trek across flatlands with views of the Mentok mountain range, getting your first glimpse of the stunning Tso Moriri Lake.

  • Day 11: Kiangdom to Karzok (21.5 Km | 4,615 m) A beautiful trek along the shores of Tso Moriri Lake with views of Chamsher Kangri and Lungser Kangri peaks. Overnight in a hotel at Karzok village.

Phase 4: Departure (Day 12)

  • Day 12: Karzok to Leh Board a shared vehicle for the approximately 5-6 hour drive to Leh, where the expedition concludes.

  • Accommodation: Hotel in Kaza (Day 1), homestay in Chicham (Days 2-3), tents during trek, hotel in Karzok (Day 11).

  • Meals: All meals from dinner on Day 2 to lunch on Day 11 as per a set menu.

  • Camping & Safety Gear: High-quality dome tents, sleeping bags, mats. Safety gear like microspikes, gaiters, and helmets as required. A Gamow Bag (HAPO chamber) is provided per batch.

  • Expert Leadership & Support: Services of a mountaineering-certified Trek Leader (with first aid), experienced trek guide, cooks, helpers, and mules for common supplies.

  • Permits: Forest and camping fees for Indian nationals.

  • Transport to/from Trek Points: Cost of transport from Manali to Kaza and from Karzok to Leh. This can be arranged at an additional cost (shared Sumo/Tempo).

  • Meals in Towns: Hotel meals in Kaza and Karzok, and any meals during road journeys.

  • Personal Expenses: Travel insurance, expenses of a personal nature, offloading of personal rucksacks.

  • Special Permits: Inner Line Permit fees for foreign nationals.

Eligibility, Fitness & Packing

  • Fitness Level: This is a BRS Level 6 (Difficult) expedition. It is mandatory to have prior high-altitude trekking experience, preferably on multiple treks rated at Level 5. Excellent physical fitness is non-negotiable.

  • Packing Essentials: You must bring all personal gear. Key items include:

    • Trekking Gear: High-ankle trekking shoes, 60-70L rucksack with rain cover, head torch, UV sunglasses, water bottles.

    • Clothing: Layered clothing for extreme cold and wind, including thermals, a warm jacket, fleece, rainwear, gloves, and woolen cap.

    • Other: Personal toiletries, sunscreen, lip balm, a personal cutlery set, and any required medications.
